Bad News: Game Developer magazine is done (R.I.P.)
Good News: They’ve made their archives available to read or download online for free!
While the magazine started with a heavy PC focus, it evolved to cover the medium as a whole, and was home to some fantastic articles about or related to Nintendo, including their legendary Postmortem features. After browsing through the archive, here are some of my favorite Nintendo-related articles (though I’d highly recommend at least skimming the entire archive; it’s an interesting trip through the modern history of the medium through a different lens than other magazines).
Note: page numbers are based on the .pdf, not the magazine pages.
In the latest Nintendo Fun Club episode, we do something a little bit different and spend some time talking to some very special guests involved in putting together an incredible art show completely inspired by video games. John sits down with Kirk, John, and Raven from Rockford Art.Cade to discuss “Backwards Compatible,” the second video game art show put on by the group. Topics include participating artists, inspiring games, and a giant foam-core portrait of Reggie Fils-Aime’s face fashioned out of arcade tokens. After talking the art show for the first 30 minutes, the crew discusses some of their favorite classic games as well as some of the more modern stuff they’ve been playing.
If you’re in the midwest and can make it out, “Backwards Compatible” is happening on October 4th and 5th in downtown Rockford, IL. If you’re not close enough to make it out, check back here and the Rockford Art.Cade Facebook page for coverage. These guys are super knowledgable about games and experienced podcasters, so whether you’re able to make the show or not, there is plenty here to enjoy.
The Bouncing Souls – We Love Fun (unofficial Nintendo Fun Club theme song)
So I (Ryan) am on a new podcast called Slime Grind Radio! Started by Bradly Hale of Nintendojo / Hardcore Gamer awesomeness, it’s a podcast all about Dragon Quest (specifically X).
The plan is to discuss/speculate about DQX up until its (hopefully) inevitable English launch, and then talk about it WAY MORE once we’re actually playing it! 🙂
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! We also plan on discussing EVERY NUMBERED DQ GAME as we each do a replay of the series as well. No promises, but I don’t think anyone on the show would be opposed to replaying and discussing the spinoffs either.
The first episode is up on iTunes (or here if you think iTunes is icky) and the second is coming in a couple weeks or so. Episode 2 will include a section on DQ I (which I recently finished again and am SO STOKED to talk about!!) and we would welcome your thoughts/impressions/memories regarding the game to read on the show, so email us at firstname.lastname@example.org!
While we’re on the subject, how about following us on Twitter as well??
VERY excited about this project, LET’S DRAGON QUEST TOGETHER WITH ENTHUSIASM!!!
