Our Favorite Gaming Podcasts of 2013

We love podcasts. Like, a ton. It’s why we started The Nintendo Fun Club Podcast in the first place. We thought we’d take a moment here to celebrate the shows that kept us smiling during our commutes / housework / lunch breaks in 2013. These are the shows that cover the games we care about, with little or none of the hyperbole, gleeful cynicism, armchair analyzing, posturing, or “AAA game” focus present in other gaming podcasts (I mean, it’s OK if podcasts want to do that stuff, it’s just not what we’re into these days). Anyway, the shows here are not in any particular order, but everything here comes with the Official Nintendo Fun Club Podcast Seal of Quality. My friend and former college/Japan roommate Kevin lives in Tokyo and reviews everything from toys to games as Shumi Nagaremono (The Hobby Drifter). His most recent video review is of the FC Mobile, a portable Famiclone, and it’s pretty well-made and informative. I kinda totally want one of these now.

The Summer Carnival ’92: Recca Soundtrack is Absolutely Insane

Summer Carnival: ’92 Recca is an ultra-rare, hardcore, Famicom shooter which was (amazingly) released on the 3DS Virtual Console last September. I’ve been dabbling with it lately and while I am utter rubbish at the game, I have found myself in awe of the soundtrack. As far as I know, Recca didn’t contain a special sound chip in the cartridge ala the Famicom version of Castlevania III, yet it still creates a soundscape I didn’t think the Famicom was capable of.
